ANGELIKI THEOHARIS (Artistic Director/Producer/Stage Director/Artist) has enjoyed a diverse career as a singer, actress and stage director. Her rich mezzo-soprano voice has been heard in major halls in New York City, including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall and CAMI Hall. Critics describe her as "a singer with untiring stamina" who "uses her dark tone to great effect". Regarding her performance as mezzo soloist in Verdi's Messa da Requiem, Richard Dyer of The Boston Globe proclaimed “Mezzo Angeliki Theoharis boasts distinctive timbre, steadiness of tone, and considerable power”. She was praised in her Jordan Hall performance in Il Trovatore, by Susan Larson of The Boston Globe: "As Azucena, the gifted mezzo, Angeliki Theoharis, ground out her hair-raising chest notes and nailed her top ones with courage and thrilling beauty." The Boston Herald lauded her performance in Cavalleria Rusticana: "As Santuzza, the heroine of Cavalleria, Theoharis displayed a voice like a canon, capable of launching one big, solid note after another, and created a largely sympathetic character."
She has been a featured soloist for numerous companies, including, Lyric Opera of New York, Hellenic Foundation of NYC, New England Light Opera, Commonwealth Opera, Opera to Go, Mass Theatrica, Worcester Opera Works, Boston Bel Canto Opera, Masterworks Chorale, Paul Madore Chorale and Opera Boston. One of her greatest honors has been appearing as Eboli in Don Carlo with the legendary bass, Jerome Hines.
Some of her favorite roles have included Azucena in Il Trovatore, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Amneris in Aida, Laura in La Gioconda, Fricka in Die Walküre, Dame Quickly in Falstaff, The Mother in Amahl and the Night Visitors and the title role in Carmen. Her concert repertoire includes Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Duruflé’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat and Vivaldi’s Gloria. In operetta, musical theater and drama, she has performed a wide range of roles including Ruth in Pirates of Penzance, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Fraulein Schneider in Cabaret, Golde in Fiddler on the Roof, Maggie in The Shadow Box, and The Nurse in Romeo and Juliet. She has stage directed Amahl and the Night Visitors, Suor Angelica, The Mikado, Patience, Once Upon a Mattress, Fiddler on the Roof and Paradise by the River (Equity staged reading, U.S. premiere). Ms Theoharis is a professor of voice and opera history at Worcester State College. She maintains a private voice studio in Central Mass.
Mythic Mezzo, her first CD, has been released on the ARKO Recordings label. Currently, she is the principal mezzo-soprano soloist with the outreach company, Opera to Go. Recent roles include The Queen of the Fairies in Iolanthe and Terentia in The Beautiful Bridegroom, by Boston composer, Dan Shore. She will sing Madame Flora in The Medium and Katisha in The Mikado for Mass Theatrica and appear as Mezzo Soloist in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony for The Paul Madore Chorale. She will portray Laura in La Gioconda for Center Stage Opera (PA). With Boston Bel Canto Opera, Ms. Theoharis will be featured in the New England premiere of Rossini’s Tancredi, performing the title role.
MEREDITH LAVINE (Executive Director/Producer/Artist) recently sang Carmina Burana with The Paul Madore Chorale Summer Sing Series and Madame Goldentrill in The Impresario in October, 2007 with Mass Theatrica. She made her international debut with Mozart arias and a portion of Exsultate, Jubilate at the Chelsea Festival in London, which was released on DVD in December, 2006. A founding member of Boston Bel Canto Opera, she has sung Suor Genovieffa in Suor Angelica and has appeared in BBCO productions of Lucia di Lammermoor, Cavalleria Rusticana, Norma, Aida, Roberto Devereux, Il Trovatore and Amahl and the Night Visitors. At home in concert repertoire, Ms. Lavine has also performed numerous recitals of Lieder and sacred works such as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Regina Coeli and Exsultate, Jubilate. Her theater credits include Actress 3 in AR Gurney's The Dining Room and the hapless Sophie De Palma in Master Class, for which she received critical acclaim. Upcoming engagements include Madame Goldentrill in The Impresario in Chanute, Kansas and Amenaide in the New England premiere of Rossini’s Tancredi in the fall of 2008 with Boston Bel Canto Opera. Ms. Lavine holds two Master’s degrees in voice and music education from The Boston Conservatory and a Master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons College. In addition, she is a professional résumé writer and researcher.
